In Germany, the nazi past does not pass. Subject of public debates intense, the anguish of amnesia imposes a “duty of memory” to the institutions, which is expressed, among other, by policies of commemoration and education. But what do the ordinary people of the past ? At the time of the new millennium, does it even for young Germans, or do they want to ” move on to something else “?

Inspired by the sociology and the history of everyday life, this book analysis “from the bottom” uses that are of the nazi past of adolescents aged 14 to 18 years in four schools, neighborhoods, bourgeois and popular, to the West (Hamburg) and eastern (Leipzig) Germany.

Combining observation, interviews and archival work, this survey gives an account of the representations and practices of the students according to their sex, their trajectories of academic, social and family, in particular, of migration, and according to different contexts : in class, in family or in between-so groups of adolescents. Interested in the meaning that the adolescent-e-s give the nazi past in their daily lives allows us to observe with finesse the gradual construction of political meaning, in laymen at a key moment of their existence.

The complexity of these appropriations of history shows the interdependence of the various stages of social, which articulate common representations of the past. But it is also more widely, in the reunified Germany, the question of the place of the history of nazism in the company.
