What are the four types of motor neuron disorders?
The disease can be classified into four main types depending on the pattern of motor neurone involvement and the part of the body where the symptoms begin.
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP)
- Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA)
- Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS)

How do ALS patients die?
Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, which occurs when people cannot get enough oxygen from their lungs into their blood; or when they cannot properly remove carbon dioxide from their blood, according to NINDS.
Is tremor a sign of ALS?
Some ALS patients use the term “tremor” when they are actually having muscle failure. When people push their muscles to the limit, they can see their muscles react. It can look like a tremor because the muscle cannot generate any more force.
Does ALS start all over body?
When symptoms begin in the arms or legs, it is referred to as “limb onset” ALS. Other individuals first notice speech or swallowing problems, termed “bulbar onset” ALS. Regardless of where the symptoms first appear, muscle weakness and atrophy spread to other parts of the body as the disease progresses.
How long does the end stage of ALS last?
Patients will be considered to be in the terminal stage of ALS (life expectancy of six months or less) if they meet the following criteria. (Should fulfill 1, 2, or 3). Patient should demonstrate critically impaired breathing capacity.
Can als be misdiagnosed?
Yes, up to 40% of patients are initially told they have another disease, and then it turns out they have ALS. Many conditions can mimic ALS. This type of a diagnostic error is called a false-negative error of diagnosis.
What is prognosis for ALS?
ALS is fatal. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is two to five years, but some patients may live for years or even decades. (The famous physicist Stephen Hawking, for example, lived for more than 50 years after he was diagnosed.)
Does ALS affect sleep?
Sleep disturbances are extremely common in patients with ALS and substantially add to the burden of disease for both patients and caregivers. Disruption of sleep can be caused by physical symptoms, such as muscle cramps, pain, reduced mobility, spasticity, mucus retention, and restless legs syndrome.
