What are the two types of framing?
Framing can be of two types, fixed sized framing and variable sized framing.
What does 2x framing mean?
It runs from the top of one joist to bottom of the two on either side and those two have a piece running from the bottom to the top of the middle joist. The way it works is, if you stand over one joist it has to push down on the two either side of it.
Do wall studs need to line up with floor joists?
The basics stipulate that the wall needs to be plumb and in the same plane. You can start this by chalking a line on the subfloor where you want one side of the wall to be. You still should try to stack the wall studs on top of any floor joists below the wall that run parallel with the wall studs.
Do I need blocking between joists?
There must be blocking where joists overlap over a center beam and every eight feet for 2×10 and taller joists. A good rule of thumb is to think if the distance between any two rows with blocking is more than eight feet, you must add some more blocking there.
Can you use screws when framing?
Nails. Framing lumber is typically fir or similar softwood, and screws often do not require pilot holes. Screws are less likely to pop out or surface than nails when wood expands or contracts. There’s less banging with a hammer, and less damage to objects on the other side of the wall.

Can I drill through a king stud?
No, it’s not ok to essentially cut a jack or king stud into two pieces. In addition to providing support to the wall from the door opening and closing, they are carrying all the load of the wall over the door via the header. You’ll need to find a different location to run your drain line.
How do I know if a stud is load bearing?
