- perforated ulcers.
- certain medications, such as codeine.
- general anesthesia.
- abdominal surgery.
- radiation injury.
- damage to the intestines.
- partial or complete blockage of the bowels.

How many bowel sounds are hypoactive?
Hypoactive bowel sounds are considered as one every three to five minutes, and this can indicate diarrhoea, anxiety or gastroenteritis. Hyperactive bowel sounds are often found before a blockage. It is quite common to find one quadrant with hyperactive bowel sounds and one with none or hypoactive ones.
Why do I not have bowel sounds?
Bowel sounds are completely normal because they are the byproduct of food passing through the digestive system. The absence of bowel sounds is actually abnormal and is usually a sign that the intestines are inactive or underactive – a condition that needs to be seen by a doctor because it could be a medical emergency.
What happens when your bowels shut down?
Intestinal ischemia is a serious condition that can cause pain and make it difficult for your intestines to work properly. In severe cases, loss of blood flow to the intestines can damage intestinal tissue and possibly lead to death.
How long should you sit to poop?
You should be able to sit down on the toilet (with minimal straining, if any), and within a few minutes you should be done going to the bathroom. Five minutes really should be the maximum time you spend in the bathroom.
How do you poop in bed?
Place the bedpan against the buttocks of the person with one hand. While holding the bedpan in place, gently roll the person onto his back and up onto the bedpan. Raise the head of the bed a little if it is allowed by the healthcare provider. Sitting upright makes having a bowel movement or urinating easier.
