What does a male and female quail look like?
Males have a bright rufous crest, chestnut flanks striped with white, and creamy belly with black patch. Females are grayer, lacking the strong head pattern.
Do female buttons call quail?
They do not crow like males but make soft calls. They are capable of making the “pew pew pew contact call but it does sound different than a crow and you should be able to hear the difference once you have both genders. Females NEVER have pink/red vent feathers.

The call patterns of the Little Button quail mainly consists of two key sounds, a loud booming “oo-ah” or “coo-oo usually sounded at night. When startled, the little buttonquail has a large squeaking call, composed of a few “chip chip-chip” sounds.
What do female quails look like?
Females are a plainer brown and lack the facial markings. Both sexes have a pattern of white, creamy, and chestnut scales on the belly. Young birds look like females but have a shorter topknot. California Quail spend most of their time on the ground, walking and scratching in search of food.
Do quails make sounds?
Both male and female Gambel’s Quail give a distinctive 3–4 note call when separated from covey members. Potential threats or something suspicious near the covey triggers a chip-chip-chip, and if a direct threat occurs the birds give a crear-crear or squawk alarm call as they take wing.
Are button quails loud?
buttons are not loud unless they are yelling across the room to the female they want to visit I would much prefer them in my house to any other quail breed!
Why are my quails so loud?
Crowing is also a territorial behavior so a male quail may crow to claim territory or assert dominance. Male quails also crow to call for their family so if you have separated the male from its flock all of a sudden then expect loud crowing. After reaching sexual maturity, male quails call females for mating.
