What does adding lime to compost do?
Many composting instructions recommend adding lime (gardening lime, limestone, calcium carbonate) to the compost bin, especially if it becomes a bit too acidic and ‘sours’, as the lime ‘sweetens’ it by reducing acidity. This depletes the compost of its nitrogen, a valuable nutrient for plant growth.
Does fertilizer help a compost pile?

Does fertilizer speed up composting?
The only reason to add fertilizer to a compost pile is to help feed the microbes. They certainly don’t need more phosphorus and potassium, but if your compost pile ingredients are mostly browns (see How to Compost – Browns & Greens), there will be a deficiency of nitrogen. Adding more nitrogen will speed up composting.
What will speed up the composting process?
Nothing slows down the creation of compost than a dry pile. Water the layers of ingredients as you construct the pile and keep it moist (but not too) between turnings. Aerate. Providing shredded sticks and other debris that creates air spaces in your pile will speed the process along.
