What GCSE can you take?
These are known as core GCSE subjects and include:
- Maths.
- English Language.
- English Literature.
- Welsh (if you live in Wales)
- Sciences (either single, double or triple science)
How many GCSEs can you take?
The vast majority of students will study 9 GCSEs. They will be awarded five GCSEs in the core subjects – English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science (2 GCSEs)- and they will then supplement that with the 4 GCSEs they will be awarded in their 4 option subjects.

It is generally accepted that most students (even the best and brightest) would struggle to do 4 with all the extra work required and it is expected that many would drop one or more of them in the second year. No UK college would let you do 5 because the work would be far too much.
Does doing 4 A levels give you an advantage?
One of the main advantages of taking four subjects is the flexibility that this affords students. There are big differences between subject specifications at GCSE and A level, so students who have very much enjoyed a subject at GCSE might not continue to feel this level of passion for it at A level.
