What happens if your spark plug wires are crossed?
Every engine manufacturer provides a service manual detailing the correct firing order of their cylinders. When one or more spark plug wires are crossed, the engine may not run, or runs roughly as the timing of fuel/air compression does not align with the delivery of the spark.
Can crossed spark plug wires cause misfire?
Screwing up the plug wire order would cause cylinder misfires, and the unburned fuel usually flow out to exhaust and potentially damage the O2 sensors and Cat – but should not happen with only few seconds of cranking the engine.
Is it bad to cross spark plug wires?
Never cross them, always run them as close to parallel as possible. That 30,000 + volts that they carry will cross-over to another and cause mis-fires. On a dark night raise your hood while it is running and see a light show, where any wires are crossed and you will see what I am saying. Do not cross them.
What causes an engine to backfire through the exhaust?
A backfire is caused by a combustion or explosion that occurs when unburnt fuel in the exhaust system is ignited, even if there is no flame in the exhaust pipe itself. Sometimes a flame can be seen when a car backfires, but mostly you will only hear a loud popping noise, followed by loss of power and forward motion.
