What is used to induce birth?
Oxytocin: The body naturally produces the hormone oxytocin to stimulate contractions. Pitocin and Syntocinon are brand name medications that are forms of oxytocin. They can be given through an IV at low doses to stimulate contractions.
How long does Pitocin take to induce?
Response time varies – some women start having mild contractions within a few hours of Pitocin being started. A quick response is more likely if you have had a baby before. Many women need 6-12 hours or more of Pitocin to enter active labor (when the cervix dilates at least a centimeter an hour).

Can jumping up and down induce labor?
Movement may help start labor. You don’t have to take a kickboxing class: even a walk around the neighborhood or going up and down a few flights of stairs could do the trick. The idea is that gravity may help your baby drop farther into the birth canal. This increased pressure may help your cervix dilate.
How do you know your cervix is low?
Insert one or two fingers into the vagina and feel for the cervix. If you can reach the cervix at just your first knuckle, your cervix is low. If you can reach it at the second knuckle of your finger, your cervix is a normal height.
Can your finger go past your cervix?
The tip of the cervix can be seen from inside of the vagina during exams and can be reached and felt by a fingertip. During menstruation, the cervix opens a small amount to allow the shedding of the endometrium (mucous membrane lining the uterus) to pass through – menstrual flow.
