IF you assimilate a species and intend to change their citizens right it will work for the first batch, but when a new wave of “new” species join the group it reverts back to full citizenship! A species that’s created by assimilation does not get the default species rights but full citizenship!

Robots are definitely strong, but they are far from mandatory. Having robots means +2 pop growth (or +66% if you compare it to the other growth buildings). It does cost you 2 pops though (per planet obvs) (1 roboticist + 1 miner upkeep). Robots also cost no consumer goods upkeep and only half housing & ameneties.

When you get the droid technology, they can do complex worker jobs, specialist jobs and entertainer jobs it seems. Which means droids can also work in the foundry as a specialist but couldn’t be a researcher.

How do you increase Stellaris pop happiness?
Take a look at your factions and see what their faction happiness is. Increasing the happiness of a faction will increase the happiness of every pop that’s a member of that faction, so if you have a large, unhappy faction it could be dragging your numbers down. Do something to appease them. Check your living standards.
