The oral mucosa is the “skin” inside the mouth, and it covers most of the oral cavity apart from the teeth. Taste buds are also located in oral mucosa and are important for recognition of taste. The major secretion associated with the oral mucosa is saliva, produced by the salivary glands.

Your gums should be firm and pink to the touch, not white or red and not tender or swollen. They should be firmly seated and shouldn’t feel loose or wiggly. Your gums should be flush with your teeth with no pockets, flaps or places where they look to be receding from your tooth.
