What is the FTC eyeglass rule?
The FTC’s Ophthalmic Practice Rules – otherwise known as the Eyeglass Rule – require prescribers to provide patients a copy of their prescription immediately after an examination to determine the refraction of a patient’s eyes, even if the patient doesn’t ask for it and even if the prescription hasn’t changed.
Do opticians have to give you your prescription?

Why do doctors not give PD?
That extra number is called your Pupillary Distance, or PD, and it’s a measure of exactly how far apart your eyes are, down to the half-millimeter. Many offices prefer not to give out the PD, or charge a fee for it. Because they know if you need the PD it means you are going to the internet for your purchase.
Does PD have to be exact?
The pupillary distance measurement does not have to be 100% precise to be useful, as it can tolerate a fairly small error range. If you do measure your own pupillary distance, it is recommended that you try several attempts to be sure you get a fairly accurate measurement.
What happens if I get my PD wrong?
The wrong PD can induce eye strain, fatigue, headaches and blurry vision. If you have a high prescription and the wrong PD these symptoms are often much worse. In my practice, some patients will complain that they “just don’t feel right”. Sometimes it is a vague sense that something is wrong with their glasses.
