What is the objective of an essay?
An essay does more than inform or persuade a reader. The process of writing an essay teaches a student how to research a topic and organize her thoughts into an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
What is an essay competition?
The IRF Student Essay Competition is an annual contest held to recognize promising road research. Participants may choose any topic within any category for their essays, or professors may wish to limit the topics based on their particular curriculum.

Judges will look for entries in each age category which exemplify one or more of the following:
- Clarity and originality of expression.
- Significance and originality of thought.
- Characters: presentation and development.
- Structure.
How do you judge a project?
Your fairness is indicated by a few simple actions:
- You spend about the same amount of time with each student.
- You listen to the student’s explanation of the project.
- The questions you ask are intended to find out more about the project and how it was done — not to embarrass or intimidate the student.
What are the most important aspect of writing?
Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Correct grammar, punctuation and spelling are key in written communications. The reader will form an opinion of you, the author, based on both the content and presentation, and errors are likely to lead them to form a negative impression.
