There are many different ways to make roses out of frosting, but we feel that this is one of the easiest and most basic methods, and produces a nice large flower (final result pictured above). You can use any buttercream recipe to make these flowers, or a medium-consistency royal icing recipe will also work.

To make your rose, start in the center, then slowly move your tip in a circle around the center point. I wanted a single rose to span the side of the cake so I looped around my center point twice. Try to end in the same place each time. Go all the way around the cake and complete with one last rose!

Use gum paste. It’s very similar in texture to fondant, but is closer to the typical buttercream frosting. It’s made with egg, shortening, and confectioner sugar. For the longest time, this was my go-to frosting recipe for sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies.
