In order for a patient to be eligible for hospice under Medicare, they must have a terminal illness with a prognosis of six months or less to live if the disease or illness runs its normal course. There are also different qualifications for different illnesses.

Can you drown while unconscious?
Yes, but not if you’re above water. When you black out, your body automatically starts breathing again. Your lungs will gasp for air since you’re programmed to inhale and exhale, even if you’re unconscious (like when you sleep). If you’re underwater, the gasp for air may let in a huge volume of water.
What happens to a persons body when they drown?
Drowning occurs when submersion in liquid causes suffocation or interferes with breathing. During drowning, the body is deprived of oxygen, which can damage organs, particularly the brain.
Does a body sink after drowning?
As a general rule, yes. A cadaver in the water starts to sink as soon as the air in its lungs is replaced with water. Once submerged, the body stays underwater until the bacteria in the gut and chest cavity produce enough gas—methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide—to float it to the surface like a balloon.
What are signs that a swimmer may be in trouble?
Signs of water distress to look for include:
- Gasping for air.
- A weak swim stroke.
- Bobbing up and down in the water.
- Hair in the eyes.
- Swimming the wrong way in a current (if in the ocean)
- Hand waving or arms out to the sides.
- Swimmers floating face down.
Could occur hours and days after the near drowning incident?
Most people survive near-drowning after 24 hours of the initial incident. Even if a person has been under water for a long time, it may still be possible to resuscitate them.
