What size are Duramax exhaust manifold bolts?
Aftermarket/Performance manifolds generally require (16) 35mm bolts.
Should you put anything on exhaust manifold bolts?
If you are reusing exhaust manifold bolts (which we don’t recommend), apply a metal fortified anti-seize to your manifold bolts. If you’ve just removed the broken bolts and ready to complete the repair, chase the threads clean and use fresh OEM bolts for best results.
Should you put anti seize on exhaust studs?
normal anti-seize should do fine for the studs where they go into the head. any other place on the exhaust would merit the high-temp stuff.
Should you put anti seize on header bolts?
FFCobra Fanatic. Anti seize is a good idea on header bolts in general, in my experience. Even steel in steel they tend to freeze up over time (if they don’t fall out, as they did to you). The advice to use some type of lock is also a good one.
Can you use bolts instead of studs for exhaust manifold?
With bolts the steel threads will be turning in nice soft aluminum. Go just a little too far and the head won’t have any threads. With studs you don’t have to screw them into the head as tightly as you do bolts.
What kind of bolts should I use for exhaust?
Best is to go stainless. 316 class stainless best pairs to the load characteristics of the exhaust man bolts, but are difficult to find. Commonly accessible, but much pricier than regular alloy steel bolts, are ARP’s and the 17-4 PH bolts offered by RMS.
Should exhaust bolts be stainless steel?
There’s nothing wrong with them on exhaust systems but you really can’t put any serious torque on them because they are much lower tensile strength than alloy steel. They will stretch more so have to be tightened more than once after break in (in this application.
Are stainless bolts good for exhaust?
I’m 99.99999% sure they use stainless bolts on jet exhausts as it won’t react with the titanium like cad plated hardware will. If it works there, it should be FINE on an air cooled engine exhaust.
Why are exhaust nuts copper?
Copper exhaust nuts are not copper through and through, they’re steel nuts with a heavy copper plating and the last couple of threads are crimped slightly to grip the stud so they loosen off.
What are copper nuts used for?
A copper lock nut really becomes useful when mounting a turbo to manifold or manifold to engine cylinder head, these can also be used as a general locking nut for all components.
