Where was biltong invented?
The biltong recipe was originally created and refined by the Dutch settlers in South Africa in the 17th century. Biltong is a staple of the South African lifestyle and is made from cured, spiced and dried beef, venison (Kudu and other antelope such as Impala are popular options) and even Ostrich.
How did biltong get its name?
The word BILTONG is derived from the words “BIL” (BUTTOCK) or meat and ‘TONG” or strip. So it is just a strip of meat. For centuries mankind has endeavoured to preserve meat. Seafarers, centuries ago, pickled meat in large wooden caskets and devoured this during the months they were at sea.
Can I eat biltong raw?
Biltong is also a ready to eat product (RTE) and cross contamination is a cause for concern as well. Even if the raw product going into the machine is clear of harmful pathogens, once it comes out of the dryer it’s again at risk of contamination.
Why does biltong go white?
The white bits are likely to be some of the salt used to marinate the product trying to rehydrate due to humidity. This poses no danger to product consumption, but if you don’t like the look of it just wipe the price with a little cider vinegar and it should go away.
Can pregnant woman eat prawns?

How do South Africans eat biltong?
Some South Africans like their biltong sliced thin; others prefer it chunky. And still others buy it in long stiff planks, using special pocket knives to cut it themselves as they eat it. Then there are a few like Sher, who claim that cutting biltong is a sin.

Can Mould on biltong make you sick?
There are some kinds of mold which are safe to consume (blue cheese is a common example) but in general they are not. While you might often be fine eating a bit, there’s no guarantee, so to be safe you should throw out moldy food like your jerky.
