What is a Skymap?
A star chart or star map, also called a sky chart or sky map, is a map of the night sky. They are used to identify and locate constellations and astronomical objects such as stars, nebulae, and galaxies. They have been used for human navigation since time immemorial.
How do you read a celestial chart?
Hold your planisphere above your head so that south is at the bottom, north is at the top, east is on the left and west is on the right. You’ll notice that east and west are reversed on the planisphere to match the view you’ll see when facing south, and the stars you see should match those on the chart.
How do you use a night sky chart?
Turn the map around so that the horizon for the direction you’re facing is right-side up. The center of the map represents the part of the sky directly overhead. So a star that’s plotted halfway from the edge to the center can be found about halfway up the sky — halfway from horizontal to overhead.
What will the great conjunction look like?
Today’s great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will be highly conspicuous in the west just after sunset. The pair will be only 0.1 degree apart at the exact moment of the conjunction. Some say they will look like an elongated star.
What is the very bright light in the sky?
Jupiter and Venus can both be strikingly bright. At maximum brightness Jupiter is four times and Venus 19 times as brilliant as Sirius, the next brightest star after the Sun. Once every 17 years Mars can be as bright as Jupiter (the last time was in 2003).
Is a comet visible in our sky?
The vast majority of comets are never bright enough to be seen by the naked eye, and generally pass through the inner Solar System unseen by anyone except astronomers. Equally, Comet Hyakutake was a relatively small comet, but appeared bright because it passed extremely close to the Earth.
