Who qualifies for authorship?
The ICMJE recommends that authorship be based on the following 4 criteria:
- Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND.
- Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND.
Can anyone write a scientific paper?
In theory, yes. There are no requirements that an author needs to have an academic title or education. Neither does one have to be affiliated to a university or other form or research institute.
How do co-authors get paid?
Co-authors are not paid upfront. All parties are active authors of the book and get full credit and usually, two or more co-authors split any publisher advance money, royalty money, and/or merchandise money. Co-author partnerships also have a contract stating who gets what and how things are split.
What is a first author publication?
In academic publishing, the lead author, or first author, is the first named author of a publication such as a research article or audit. The list of trailing co-authors reflects, typically, diminishing contributions to the work reported in the manuscript.
