Why are deers important?
As herbivores, deer play a crucial role in the ecosystem, providing food for large predators such as gray wolves (Canis lupis), cougars (Puma concolor), bobcats (Lynx rufus), and coyotes (Canis latrans). They feed primarily on grasses, herbaceous plants, fruits, and legumes and are active throughout the year.
Will deer ever go extinct?
Twenty-three subspecies of deer are listed as endangered and are disappearing from the world. Most notably, Key deer, found only in the Florida Keys, were almost completely eradicated by the mid-1900s.
How do deer impact the environment?
Benefits to the Ecosystem Deer are considered a keystone species. This means that they directly impact the lives of other plants and animals. At the correct population, white-tailed deer increase biodiversity and encourage new plant growth. Their feces add to the soil encouraging plants to grow and thrive.
What would happen to deers if wolves went extinct?
If wolves went extinct, the food chain would crumble. The elk and deer population would increase (see chart on next slide) and eat the cow and other livestock’s food. Then we, the Humans, would have a food shortage in beef and dairy and possibly shortages in other food products too.
