Why are head bolts torque to yield?
Traditional fasteners are torqued to a load that will slightly stretch the bolt but won’t over-stretch it past its yield point. Torque-to-yield (TTY) fasteners are stretched beyond the point of elongation to ensure a more consistent clamp load on the joint.
Are ARP head bolts torque to yield?
ARP head bolts are made of a high tensile strength steel. So you would need to put twice as much torque on the bolt to actually get it to yield. ARP head bolts are made of a high tensile strength steel. They have an Fy of something like 180,000 psi where your typical steel building is only made of 50,000 psi steel.
Can you reuse ARP 2000 rod bolts?
Yes. As long as the fasteners have been installed and torqued correctly, and show no visible signs of damage, they can be re-used. If they show any signs of thread galling or corrosion, they should be replaced. In the case of rod bolts, if any of them have taken a permanent set and have stretched by .
How many times can I reuse ARP head studs?
ARP studs are not torque to yield so you can tighten them as many times as you want with out damage. The only time you would do damage to them is if you over tighten them and stretch them permanently rather than just elastically.
Should you use threadlocker on head bolts?
If the heads are torqued properly you dont need thread locker. If I use it on anything it is always blue. The key to it is to use locker only on the last couple threads so like halfway down the bolt.
Do you use lock tight on head bolts?
NO! You can use blue locktite in alot of places, but your headbolts are not one of them. Headbolts need to be brought up to torque specs in stages, and in a specific order (see a motor manual), and then re-torqued after the engine has been run for awhile to make sure they are all at the proper torque value.
What do you put on head bolt threads?
Trans oil on head bolts, and permatex #2 on bolts into water. First – IMO don’t use a TAP to clean the head bolt threads in the block – use a thread “chaser” – they are designed to only clean the threads without removing the block thread material that a tap will.
Do head bolts need sealer?
Oil under the head of the bolt prevents binding while torquing the head bolts. A slight amount of sealer is needed on the threads to seal them.
