Why do ice skaters tape their skates?
It is used to protect the leather from scrapes, scratches and scuff-marks and also to give the skates a remarkably clean, bright look that no polish can match.
Is it bad to skate on dull skates?
It’s really a personal preference. Basically, get them sharpened when they feel too dull for you, or you lose an edge on one side of the skate or you have nicks in the blade. As a rule of thumb, an average hockeyplayer will lose somewhere between 5 and 10 % of the skates edge per hour of skating.
Should you tie your skates all the way up?
I (usually) recommend that players lace their skates snugly through the middle part of the foot (the part of the foot that needs the most support), but that above the ankle (the top eyelet of the boot) they should keep them somewhat looser. For the same reason I do not recommend taping the ankles.
Why do my feet hurt so bad when ice skating?
If you wear heavy socks, your boot won’t fit naturally and may be too tight, causing foot pain. You should feel at one with the boot — as if your boot was an extension of your foot. Heavy socks could also cause your foot to sweat, which could make the boot feel uncomfortable.

How do you know if your skates are sharp?
We recommend testing 3-5 spots up and down the blade on both the inside and outside edges. If you feel a little bite to your nail as you drag it across the edge – the edge is sharp. The edge of a perfectly sharpened skate blade will NOT be visible.
