Why does my door lock not work?
The lock mechanism may not work simply because the lock is dirty or dry and needs to be lubricated with graphite (do not use any type of oil because this will gum-up the works). An improperly functioning latch may be the result of a poorly fitting door.
What do you do when your door lock is stuck?
Just gently squeeze a very small amount of graphite powder into the keyhole, and then use your key to slowly work the lubricant into the lock. Another way to do it is to coat your key with the graphite powder first, and then simply insert it into the lock.
How do I stop my front door from locking?
You do that usually by turning the key all the way around to the right or all the way around to the left, then coming back to center. Try that to see if you deactivate the locking of the door when you close it from the outside. If not, you will have to replace your door lock with a “classroom lock” or deadbolts.
Can’t open my front door?
Use a spatula or putty knife to get a little space between the door and the frame, then use a combination of wiggling and brute force to get the door open. Don’t try to kick or smash it open because this could damage the door and injure you. You can try bracing one foot against the frame and pulling hard.
What is the best lubricant for a door lock?
Graphite powder is the preferred lubricant for locks. You should be able to get it at any hardware store in a squeeze bottle that is half air, allowing you to blow it right into the keyway. You are going to have to wait a while before putting it on, as the residual WD-40 will gum it up.
What do you spray in locks?
Spray a light all-purpose household lubricant or silicone lubricant on all moving parts of the lock, flushing out the latchbolt. Use powdered graphite to lubricate the lock cylinder.
Is White Lithium Grease good for locks?
White lithium grease is good for metal-to- metal joints like hinge and latch mechanisms, which need a clinging grease to repel water and hold up under harsh conditions. Graphite lubricant is the right choice for locks—it won’t attract dirt to fine lock mechanisms like an oil would.
Is white lithium grease water resistant?
Lithium-complex greases generally possess good stability, high-temperature characteristics and water-resistance properties.
