Why is my throttle cable loose?
1. Improper cable adjustment and slow acceleration response. When there is excess slack or the cable is too tight, this can cause intermittent delays in throttle response relative to pressing down on the accelerator pedal.
What are the symptoms of a loose throttle cable?
Signs of a bad accelerator cable
- The pedal feels stiff or hard to depress.
- The pedal sticks and does not release normally.
- There is slack in the pedal’s movement.
- There is a rough or abnormally low idle.
- The engine stalls.
- There is a delay in response when you push the pedal down.
How do I stop my throttle cable from slipping?
Pour penetrating oil into the cable (Photo 1). Grab the inner cable with pliers and work it up and down to loosen it. When the cable moves freely and all the penetrating oil has drained out, squirt silicone lubricant into the funnel to keep the cable sliding freely. Reinstall the cable (Photo 2).

Usually, you can expect to get five years from your accelerator cable before it needs to be replaced. Usually, your accelerator cable won’t simply “let go.” You will notice one or more of the following signs: Car jerks when using cruise control. How much does it cost to fix a loose gas pedal?

Why does my car rev when I accelerate?
When the transmission develops a leak and fluid levels fall, a vehicle will begin to rev at higher levels as a result of the gearbox band or torque converter slipping. The vehicle may also experience irregular or delayed gear shifting. A manual vehicle experiencing this difficulty may be related to a slipping clutch.
Can change gears but car won’t move?
The number one cause is the clutch components have worn out and no longer have enough friction material to overcome the weight of the vehicle. A second possibility is the transmission can be stuck in two gears at the same time and it won’t move. The shift mechanism can malfunction and keep you from selecting a gear.
