Getting a part-time job whilst studying may seem a bit daunting. With all the essays, exams and dissertations, it can be easy to think that there’s little time to get a job on top of that. I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times, but yes, having a job looks GREAT on your CV. It shows that you’re capable of managing to keep up with your academic work whilst having other responsibilities. It’s all very well saying you’ve got the skills needed, but if you can prove you have the skills, you’re already one up on the other candidates. Even if you don’t get the job, having interview experience is a lesson in itself – you know what kind of thing to expect for the next job you go for.
Getting a job allows you to meet people from all walks of life, and I’ve met so many amazing friends that I never would have otherwise. I’m not saying that you’re going to get on with everyone you work with, there’s bound to be people that you click with more. But learning to be respectful and tolerant of those who you disagree with – well that’s another important life lesson!
If, like me, you’re the procrastination champion of the world, having a part-time job alongside your studies can actually be great. If I’ve got a deadline due and I’ve also got a shift at work, I am so much better at managing my time – there is no time for endless social media scrolling or shopping the ASOS sale. The essay’s got to be done, so it gets done.
Speaking of the ASOS sale, having a job is also a fab way to have a little bit of extra income. We all know it can be difficult to manage with just a student loan alone, so having a bit of extra money every month really goes a long way. It gives me a bit more freedom, so I don’t have to worry so much if my hand ‘accidentally’ clicks on the ‘buy’ button and then, as luck would have it, those shoes I really wanted arrive in the post. Any money left over at the end of each month goes into savings, which eventually turns into my summer holiday fund, which is a great way to take a break after working so hard all year round.
If you’re looking for a part-time job, getting one on campus is a great shout. It means you’re close to the library for all those tight deadlines, you don’t have to pay extra in transport costs (which can really add up if you’re spending £4 return to Coventry on the bus) and it’s easy to meet with friends on your lunch break.
There are often jobs coming up at the SU, which includes in the offices as well as the outlets. Otherwise, it‘s definitely worth registering with Unitemps, which has an office at The Beehive in Westwood Business Park and student reception at Senate House. They offer both temporary and permanent posts both on and off campus, and they pay well too. Even better, if you work more than 12 weeks in a row you get an increased holiday rate. They often need staff to work for one-off events, which is fab if you don’t want to commit to a set number of hours each week. There’s such a variety of jobs on the website you’re sure to find something that suits.
