The first task of the social sciences –and, therefore, of the teaching of the social science research – is to establish as a fundamental norm of scientific practice the conversion of thought, the revolution of the gaze, the rupture with pre-built and all that, in the social order –and in the scientific universe, sustains it.

For the third consecutive year, this seminar seeks to serve as a space for knowledge and shared reflection on the practice of research in social sciences. At the initiative of the students of master’s and doctoral programs and in coordination with the department Sociological Theory (Sociology V) of the Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology, Complutense University of Madrid, this seminar will bring together young researchers, mainly students from master’s and phd, andresearchers invited in two monthly sessions of a maximum of two and a half hours, in addressing various topics and areas of study from research experiences , and specific and heterogeneous in the social sciences, combining the exposures of the guests with the debate among the participants.
An invitation to the conversion of the gaze, to the sharing of questions and projects, and to listen to generate among all spaces for reflection and collaborative learning.

Imagining sociology: reflections on the genesis and development of a research project on the current crusade against tobacco use

An investigation is, to a large extent, a process of discovery, a journey in which we go on encountering unexpected things. Hence the need of harmonizing the theoretical with the empirical. In my case, the observation of the metaphors used around the consumption of tobacco led me to devices concept within the fields of Sociology of religion and the Sociology of war, which were the starting point of a theoretical approach, in the light of which I was interpreting data extracted from sources, documentaries (historical, literary, scientific, governmental, or journalistic film and ublicitarias) as derived from direct observation of reality and the discourses of various social actors.
Another essential aspect of my research was the genealogical analysis; that is, the reconstruction of how things have come to be what they are, because what that assumes and naturalizes to a better social control is, in reality, the result of a social construction.
Some of these aspects are brilliantly developed in the book of C. Wright Mills, The sociological imagination, whose reading I recommend, along with two texts that associate to introduce my work around to the cross-anti-smoking. The first of them is titled “Discourses and political practices around the cross anti-smoking” and I spoke at the III Jornades de l Associació Valenciana d Anthropology at the end of 2010. In he story, broadly speaking, the boot of the theoretical framework that I used for the elaboration of my doctoral thesis. The second are the conclusions of the thesis, updated for your next publication in book form under the title “Modernity and change of values: the case of tobacco”.
