Do atoms ever touch?
If “touching” is taken to mean that two atoms influence each other significantly, then atoms do indeed touch, but only when they get close enough. With 95% of the atom’s electron probability density contained in this mathematical surface, we could say that atoms do not touch until their 95% regions begin to overlap.
How do atoms look like?
In order to clearly visualize atoms, a scanning tunneling microscope is used which is a microscope that uses electrons instead of light to see very small objects. The resolution of these microscopes is good enough so that individual atoms can be seen as bumps. All atoms will scatter some of the light that hits them.

Why do electrons move from negative to positive?
