A guide to Term 3 told by the ghost of Library past

We’ve dug out some gems from the Modern Records Centre to help tell the story of Library life in Term 3…By Nuala Clarke

It’s Term 3 and with it comes a demand for a strict Library etiquette to be observed. Tensions are high and whisperings in the Floor 2 extension will no longer be tolerated. Here’s a guide to Term 3 through our archive photos:

1. Let’s keep hot drinks to Floors 1 & 2 in the main Library building

Knitted stockings, however, are allowed in all areas of the Library. Encouraged even.

2. Shuuuusshhhh…

Floors 3, 4 & 5 and the floor 2 extension are all quiet and silent study areas so make sure you keep noise to a minimum. Floor 2 extension also has laptop-free zones so check the signage if you are bringing your own laptop in.

3. Don’t camp out in the Library…

While the Library is 24/7 in Term 3, we don’t want you to be spending an unhealthy amount of time here. Make sure you go home and get your 8 hours sleep!

 4. Do you really need to use the lift?

We all know that taking the lift to floor 2 (unless you actually need to – in which case, please do!) is a frown-able offence.

5. Jam sandwiches and lashings of lemonade!

6. Leaving the Library?

Make sure you take your belongings with you if you’ll be gone for more than a quick lunch break. And never leave any precious items unattended. Laptops for example, or long reams of fabric…

7. Rallying together?

“A good team needs three things: the right people, the right spirit, and a couple of inside jokes”. Keep group work to Floors 1 & 2 (or the grids), so as to not disturb others.

8. Have some fun!

You need to take breaks for effective revision so take some Library-leave and get some fresh air!

Best of luck with your exams, theses and dissertations! I’ll leave you with an old list of rules for bell-ringers that put the Library’s to shame!
