Are emus easy to keep?
Not all of the emus came, but some did. Emus are big birds—usually 110 to 150 pounds! —but they’re docile and can make great pets or livestock. To keep them, you’ll need tall wire fences with openings that the emus can’t get their heads stuck in, such as no-climb horse fencing.

What do you feed an emu?
Adult emus in the wild, also get all their nutritional needs by feeding off pasture grass, seeds, natural fruits, greens, insects and even small animals they happen to find in their natural habitat. They will also swallow small stones to help digest many of these tougher or harder food types.
How much do you feed an emu?
An adult emu will eat an average of 1 1/2 pounds of ground or pelleted feed per day. They will eat less if they are allowed to “graze” all day long with feed available to them at all times. It is not advised to keep emus with other poultry.

We recommend getting your emus as chicks to acclimate them to you, to get them tame and then introducing them to your poultry when they are old enough to be outdoors by separating them in an area where they can see your poultry. Emus must be handled from behind, grasping the wings and lifting the bird slightly upward and back. The front of the bird should be avoided to prevent being injured by the claws on the feet, because, as with all ratites, emus will kick forward to try to escape.
