Does turmeric grow in the United States?
Turmeric can be grown outside year-round in USDA zones 8 and higher, in the ground or in containers. We like to grow ours in several wine barrels, which allows us to easily control the soil quality and moisture level. In zones 7 and lower, growing turmeric is still possible!
Where does turmeric grow best?
It thrives best on loamy or alluvial fertile soils and cannot stand waterlogging. Heavy shade will reduce the yield but light shade is beneficial. Ground turmeric comprises 25% of curry powder and is used to give it a yellow colour. The harvested rhizomes are boiled and sun-dried for 7-8 days but can be used fresh.

Do you soak turmeric before planting?
Turmeric rhizomes are typically smaller than ginger so you may not need to break your turmeric into smaller pieces. You’ll just want to make sure there are a few nubs on each piece. You’ll want to soak your pieces for a few hours before planting. You can soak them overnight if you wish.
How do I prepare turmeric for planting?
Your turmeric is ready to harvest when the leaves and stem start to turn brown and dry, about seven to 10 months after planting. Tip out the plants, soil and all, and shake the soil off your fresh turmeric. Cut the stems off an inch or so above the mass of rhizomes and wash the rhizomes well.
