What 3 things make a cloud?
Concepts: 1. Students will discover that three main ingredients are needed for clouds to form: moisture, condensation, and temperature. 2. Evaporation and condensation are part of how a cloud forms.
What is the main process of cloud formation?
Clouds form when the invisible water vapor in the air condenses into visible water droplets or ice crystals. For this to happen, the parcel of air must be saturated, i.e. unable to hold all the water it contains in vapor form, so it starts to condense into a liquid or solid form.
Can you physically touch a cloud?
It’s the same with water droplets. Although we can see clouds, if you were to try to touch one your hand would go straight through it. This is because the water droplets are very very small, like the water in steam. Although we can’t really touch clouds you could walk through one.
Do clouds smell?
Lightning inside of clouds produces ozone—that’s the smell that tells you that a storm is on the way. Ozone is made up of three oxygen atoms, and has sort of a light chlorine smell, says Dalton. Some people might describe it as fresh, others as a little sharp.
Are anvil clouds dangerous?
Anvils can produce some of the most dangerous and deadly lightning and that is lightning that comes from the higher portion of an anvil. A bolt out of blue, which is lightning that strikes when there is blue sky and storm that generates it can be up to 30 miles out! This why it’s called a bolt out of the blue.
Are Wall clouds dangerous?
Wall clouds that rotate are a warning sign of very violent thunderstorms. They can be an indication that a tornado will touch down within minutes or even within an hour. A funnel cloud is a rotating column of air (visible due to condensation) that does not reach the ground.
What are the big fluffy clouds called?
Cumulus clouds
What are the thin wispy clouds called?
Cirrus clouds
What 2 characteristics are used to classify clouds?
Clouds are categorized according to two main characteristics: height in the atmosphere (low, middle, or high) and shape (nimbus, stratus, cumulus, or cirrus). Cloud types are named using combinations of height and shape characteristics and provide information about how clouds form and behave.
Are stratus clouds high or low?
Stratus clouds are low-level clouds characterized by horizontal layering with a uniform base, as opposed to convective or cumuliform clouds that are formed by rising thermals. The word stratus comes from the Latin prefix strato-, meaning “layer”. Stratus clouds may produce a light drizzle or a small amount of snow.
