What are the effects of seizures?
Seizure signs and symptoms may include:
- Temporary confusion.
- A staring spell.
- Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs.
- Loss of consciousness or awareness.
- Cognitive or emotional symptoms, such as fear, anxiety or deja vu.
What are the main causes of seizures?
Anything that interrupts the normal connections between nerve cells in the brain can cause a seizure. This includes a high fever, high or low blood sugar, alcohol or drug withdrawal, or a brain concussion. But when a person has 2 or more seizures with no known cause, this is diagnosed as epilepsy.
Can seizures be a good thing?

What you need to know about seizures?
A mild seizure may be difficult to recognize. It can last a few seconds during which you lack awareness. Stronger seizures can cause spasms and uncontrollable muscle twitches, and can last a few seconds to several minutes. During a stronger seizure, some people become confused or lose consciousness.

How do you fill out a seizure action plan?
On your Seizure Action Plan, make sure to include the following information:
- Your information: name, home address, phone number.
- Your birthdate.
- 1st emergency contact: Include full name, relationship to you, and how to contact them.
- 2nd emergency contact: Include full name, relationship to you, and how to contact them.
Should you restrain during a seizure?
You must absolutely not: Hold the person down or attempt to restrain them in any way; this is very dangerous for everyone involved, as a person experiencing a seizure cannot control their movements.
What not to do if someone is having a seizure?
- Do not hold the person down or try to stop his or her movements.
- Do not put anything in the person’s mouth. This can injure teeth or the jaw.
- Do not try to give mouth-to-mouth breaths (like CPR).
- Do not offer the person water or food until he or she is fully alert.
What to do if someone is choking during a seizure?
If a person appears to be choking, turn them on their side and call for help. If they are not able to cough and clear their air passages on their own or are having breathing difficulties, call 911 immediately.
Should I go to the hospital after having a seizure?
If you see someone who is having an epileptic seizure, you should call an ambulance or 911 if: The seizure lasts more than five minutes. Another seizure starts right after the first. The person can’t be awakened after the movements have stopped.
Can you stop breathing during a seizure?
During the tonic phase of the seizure, they may temporarily stop breathing and their face may become dusky or blue, especially around the mouth. This period is usually brief (usually no more than 30 to 45 seconds) and does not require CPR.
Can your heart stop during a seizure?
The electrical activity in the brain during a seizure can also change our pulse and usually causes an increase in heart rate. However, during some seizures, the heart can slow or even stop temporarily, which is referred to as ictal asystole.
