What is graying in sociology?
The term “Graying of America” means that, overall, the U.S. population is increasingly consisting of more elderly citizens. They are becoming a bigger segment of society and their needs are causing governments to have to put into place new or enhanced programs to care for this older populace.
How will the graying of America look?
In less than two decades, the graying of America will be inescapable: Older adults are projected to outnumber kids for the first time in U.S. history. Already, the middle-aged outnumber children, but the country will reach a new milestone in 2034 (previously 2035).
What problems might a country with a graying population face in the future?
An economy that cannot fill in-demand occupations faces adverse consequences, including declining productivity, higher labor costs, delayed business expansion and reduced international competitiveness.
Why is an aging population bad for the economy?
An aging population and slower labor force growth affect economies in many ways—the growth of GDP slows, working-age people pay more to support the elderly, and public budgets strain under the burden of the higher total cost of health and retirement programs for old people.
How much do old people cost the economy?
By 2040, older people will be spending 63p in every pound spent in the UK economy – up from 54p in 2018. Older people are spending their money right across the economy, the report found, but the top three growing sectors were recreation and culture, transport and household goods and services.
