What is the advantage and disadvantage of friction?
Friction produces unnecessary heat leading to the wastage of energy. The force of friction acts in the opposite direction of motion, so friction slows down the motion of moving objects. Forest fires are caused due to the friction between tree branches.
How friction is created?
Anytime two objects rub against each other, they cause friction. Friction works against the motion and acts in the opposite direction. When one object is sliding on another it starts to slow down due to friction. By rubbing them together we generate friction and, therefore, heat.
What are the two factors that friction depends on?
The friction force depends on two factors:
- a) The materials that are in contact. The two materials and the nature of their surfaces.
- b) The force pushing the two surfaces together. Pushing the surfaces together causes the more of the asperities to come together and increases the surface area in contact with each other.
What factors do not affect friction between two objects?
Friction does not depend on the amount of surface area in contact between the moving bodies or (within certain limits) on the relative speed of the bodies. It does, however, depend on the magnitude of the forces holding the bodies together.
How do you increase friction on a surface?
There are two methods of increasing friction: one is by making the surfaces rough and the other by increasing the mass of the object that is moving. For example, the tyres of vehicles have treads (these are the ‘designs’ that you can see on the tyre surface), which increase the friction between the tyre and the road.
What happens if there is no friction?
Friction stops things from sliding apart. If there was no friction everything would slide to the lowest point. It would be impossible to climb up anything. With no friction the only possible movement would be falling to a lower point under gravity.
