What makes a distant galaxy appear twice when viewed from Earth?
The universe’s expansion, when doubled in size, causes all th dots to appear twice as far as they once were, from the perspective of the point of origin. As the universe expands, the galaxies get farther from each other, and the apparent velocity will appear to be larger for the more distant galaxies.

Why do we see the past when we look into space?
“Because light takes time to get here from there, the farther away ‘there’ is the further in the past light left there and so we see all objects at some time in the past,” explains Floyd Stecker of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

This scattering is called Rayleigh scattering. Blue and violet colors are scattered the strongest by air. Despite the atmosphere containing so much air, it does not contain enough air to scatter 100% of the light and therefore act as opaque. We thus see the sky as a whitish-blue semi-transparent layer.
