Why did the p51 have such a long-range?
The P-51 used the Merlin engine that gave it great high altitude performance. Since airplanes use less fuel at higher altitudes, that enabled them to fly longer distances. The biggest advantage, though, was the use of drop tanks, which let the P-51 carry enough fuel to provide fighter escort to bombers during WWII.
