Which one is lighter oil or water?
Most oils are lighter than water. This includes petroleum-based oils (kerosene, gasoline) and vegetable oils (groundnut oil, coconut oil etc.). Oil floats on water because its density is less than that of water (1.0 g/cc). There are some oils (organic liquids) that are heavier than water.
Why does oil float and not sink?
First you should have noticed that when you added the oil to the water they did not mix together. Instead the oil created a layer on the surface of the water. This is because oil is less dense than water and therefore it floats to the surface.

Does Matter have volume?
