Why do we celebrate Cavadee?
Thaipoosam Cavadee is a festival of Tamil origin that marks the end of ten days of fasting. On this occasion the participants make a pilgrimage to the temple to make offerings and purify themselves. This festival is dedicated to Murugan or Mourouga, son of Shiva and the goddess Parvati.
How do you keep Cavadee fast?
A ten day fasting starts with a flag hosting ceremony at the temple. During the day devotees drink water, eat vegetarian food and sleep. Abstinence, fasting and prayers contribute to their deep spiritual uplift. Devotees build their cavadee.
