Why must you stand clear and make sure no one is touching the victim when the AED is analyzing?
The AED may instruct you to “Stop CPR, do not touch patient, analysing”. The rescuer will then say “CLEAR!” to ensure that nobody is touching the victim while the AED analyses the victims heart rhythm. A shock is only indicated if the victim’s heart is in ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT).
Why do we say stand clear when using an AED?
Defibrillators use large amounts of electricity to restore the human heart to a normal rhythm. At its highest setting, a defibrillator sends 360 joules through a person’s body. This is also why doctors who are in the process of defibrillating do so while standing clear of the bed where the patient is laying.
